Tolaga Bay Cashmere is the only company in the world to breed goats for the fineness of their fleece, made possible by the temperate climate in which they range. The fleece from other cashmere goats is often a by-product of the meat or coarser because of the colder climates.
The goat herd is the result of 25 years of selective breeding and the fibre has a 15-micron rating. Most fine Italian cashmere has a minimum of an 18-micron rating and the cashmere is often sourced in Asia. Some specialist products made by Tolaga Bay have an unheard of 12-micron rating which, comes from the fleece of baby goats.
Tolaga Bay also has a 97% down yield which is unprecedented. They can achieve this by shearing in early winter as the temperate seldom gets below freezing. In this way the cashmere coat has just grown and is shorn in its pure state, not after a long hard winter has taken its toll. An 88% down yield is considered excellent by international standards; most cashmere on the market has a 70-80% down rating.
The fleece gets sent to Scotland to be spun and dyed and then sent back to New Zealand to be woven. The weaving is a boutique operation with the owner closely involved in every stage. It has taken four years of trial and error to develop the fine weave that is used to construct the blankets. The 100% silk trim is hand-dyed to match the cashmere yarn.
The boutique nature of Tolaga Bay also allows them to offer a bespoke service where any product can be especially dyed and made to customers specifications. Also note that production is limited so please allow 10 to 12 weeks for custom orders.
